Orthotics Q & A

What are Orthotics?

An orthotic at On the River Chiropractic in Henderson, KY is a custom-made orthotic that is used to stabilize the feet in an attempt to reduce pain and allow a person to continue to perform day-to-day activities. Our orthotics are inserted into your shoes to help support the entire foot and improve function. The orthotics are truly custom-made and can provide different control and support to both your right and left foot. Unlike mass-produced inserts that can be purchased at retail centers, custom-made orthotics are individualized, functional, and are designed to produce biomechanical results, not simply supply cushion in your shoes.

How is an Orthotic created?

When a custom orthotic is deemed medically necessary and prescribed for our patients, measurements will be taken to ensure that the orthotic will fit exactly as it should and provides the proper support. Dr. Thaler will determine what type of materials are needed and the specific design of your orthotic to provide optimal support based upon your daily activities. A mold will be taken of both feet to ensure any structural abnormalities are accounted for when the orthotic is made.  The mold is taken with your foot placed in a corrected position as prescribed by Dr. Thaler.  This is very different from standing on a scanner at a big box or running shoe store. If the orthotic is for a child or young adult, it may be designed so that it can be made larger to account for additional growth.

How does Dr. Thaler use Orthotics?

At On the River Chiropractic in Henderson, KY, orthotics are utilized to secure and stabilize the structure and function of our patients’ foundation – their feet. We stand and move too often and too long in today’s environment, especially the amount of time spent on hard surfaces like pavement or concrete, thus creating a strenuous life for our feet. This often causes a chain reaction of events creating imbalances and tension in our pelvis, hips, ankles, knees and ultimately the spine. Therefore, Dr. Thaler uses orthotics to stabilize your foundation which can also help with conditions such as low back pain, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, ITB syndrome, and even headaches.
